Opal

Hi everyone, my name is Opal! Did you know that the word *Opal* is believed to be derived from the Sanskrit word *upala*, which means 'jewel'? My foster family thinks this makes perfect sense because I am definitely precious! I am a 2 year old, 4.8 pound Biewer Yorkie and I was thankfully surrendered by a commercial breeder where I was bred my entire life so they could make money off the sale of my puppies.

I am now learning what it means to be a loved pet in a home and that people can be caring. My foster family says even though it takes a little time for me to warm up to new people, once I'm comfortable I’m really sweet and snuggly. I have recently learned the joys of being pet and even though I may seem timid at first, if you stop petting me I will give you a few gentle taps asking for more!

Something else that I've learned to love is going on walks! I enjoy walking around the neighborhood and finding lots of things to sniff. Sometimes I even get so excited about my new life that I get spurts of energy and want to run as fast as I can, you better keep up!

My furry foster brother has been really important in helping me learn what it means to be a loved dog. It will be very important that I go to a home with another confident dog who will help me continue to learn what it means to be a loved pet, to feel safe, and who I can look to when something new comes up.

I am crate trained and I spend the day in there while my foster parents are at work and I sleep in it at night too. It’s not my favorite place to be but I understand it’s for my safety.

In fact, my favorite place in the whole world will be curled up next to you on the couch!

I am doing really good with potty training but accidents are to be expected until I understand the routine in my new home. Also, because of my Yorkie coat, I will need regular grooming.
